Abstract

The “Stay Home” strategy due to COVID-19, as well as its effects, must be analyzed with a gender perspective. Unfortunately, isolation exacerbated violence against women and accentuated the serious problems that had already been experienced previously. Additionally, gender roles came to life with great intensity within the home: to the formal work that a woman could perform it was added an aggravated weight of domestic work now with the whole family at home (cleaning, cooking, buying supplies and food; laundry and ironing, etc.). In addition, the burden of the care economy was added: care and attention for ascendants and descendants or sick people and even support or assumption of the responsibilities / obligations related to the girls and boys education. All this situation made the double or triple working hours that women are subjected to become more complex, affecting their performance in the formal job that they could have or reducing their chances of finding a new job if they had lost it due to the pandemic or cutting off the opportunity to join the formal economy.
